In continuous operation since 1941, the 299-room El Cortez is a hidden gem of downtown, once owned by the infamous Bugsy Siegel. Until recently the El Cortez was owned by Jackie Gaughan, a pioneer of modern Las Vegas gaming and a contemporary of Benny Binion. Though he has recently sold his ownership to insiders who plan to carry on his tradition of value-oriented casino/hotel operation, Gaughan still lives in the penthouse suite at the El Cortez and can be easily met at a poker table on the casino floor several nights of the week. The development of Fremont East (just walk down Fremont past Neonopolis, walk half a block to your left, and continue down the well-lighted, well-guarded path to the El Cortez) has made the trek to the affectionately-known “Tez” an easy and safe one. The El Cortez is currently remodeling an all-suite extension, but for the moment guests are well advised to request a “tower” room. If you happen to be in Las Vegas for an old-Vegas experience, request a “Vintage Suite” or “Vintage Queen”. This will be in the original (‘40s era) building, but will be accessible only via stairs. Great blackjack, good video poker, and relatively loose slots await the patrons of the El Cortez. Comps and marketing offers from the El Cortez are easy, underscoring their commitment to making even low-rollers number one.

I had reservations there in March and cancelled them 6 weeks in advance to stay at the Las Vegas Club. They did not give me a cancellation number so I ended up paying for one night on my credit card. They taught me one thing. Always get a cancellation number and keep it safe for at least a year.I usually stay downtown at the Plaza or Las Vegas Club. Never had a problem cancelling a reservation. I would not advise anyone giving this establishment your credit card number
