Originally built as a budget resort, Luxor has been through several transformations since it went up. Almost immediately after opening it was re-positioned as a mid-to-higher level joint, adding new hotel towers and other amenities. It continued on this way for several years but when Mandalay Bay was built, company focus turned away from Luxor and to its more impressive new sibling.

When MGM Mirage bought Luxor in 2004, they began to plan its much needed re-birth. This was to include renovations, a new show, new attractions – the works. After a failed attempt at Broadway with ‘Hairspray’, the company turned to faithful partner Cirque du Soleil to create a show along with New Jersey’s pride, Criss Angel.

These renovations are currently underway – the new show opened October 2008, the rooms will be re-done by next year and a new slate of restaurants have been put in place. Even ‘Ra’, the nightclub that was ahead of its time in Las Vegas has been replaced by ‘LAX’, an outpost of an LA joint. The Egyptians are moving out of the pyramid it seems, replaced by silk sheets, high end steaks and French-Canadian magic tricks.
